Teacher: Teresa Gibson, Creature of Habitat

Teresa Gibson is the artist behind Creature of Habitat. Her journey into becoming an artist started at a young age, surrounded by nature in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The American River canyon, the golden hues of summer, and the deep piney greens of winter are where she finds inspiration, peace of mind, and clarity in what she wants to create. She brings over ten years of jewelry-making experience to her practice.

She has long been captivated by the earthy color palette of the foothills of Colfax—rusty dirt, canyon slate, manzanita reds, and minty lichen. Teresa loves mixing materials such as brass, seed beads, natural crystals and stones, leather, and botanicals, using the physical properties of each material and the architectural manipulation of stitches to bring color and texture into action. Resin work adds character and personality to each piece, and each of her pieces is one of a kind.

All the plants and flowers she uses in her work are native to California, collected while hiking trails throughout Placer, Nevada, and El Dorado Counties. Through intricate stitchwork, Teresa hopes to share a piece of the foothills—capturing a moment of untamed beauty to be carried into everyday life.

Made by hand, with love and a very tiny needle.
